Excerpt from “East LA to Encino: Trauma to Triumph” by McPatti Langston
We had been living in the new house in Encino for a few weeks, and it was starting to feel like home when there was a knock on the front door.
“Elizabeth?” Mommy called from her bedroom. “Can you get that for me?”
My eight-year-old self skipped over to the door and opened it, expecting the postman or someone trying to sell us something. It was Daddy; my heart leaped. I hadn’t seen or heard from him in months.
“Daddy!” I yelled. “I missed you!” I threw out my arms for a big hug, but he didn’t touch me. Instead, he crouched down to look me in the eyes.
“Get away from me, Elizabeth,” he said. “I do not ever want to see or talk to you again. You told your mother about my girlfriend. That’s why she divorced me, you know. You ruined my life.” He stood and brushed his hands off on his jeans. “Go get your brother. He’s the one I’m here to see.”
Dear Readers,
Writing this novel has been a deeply personal and transformative journey for me. Though the story is fictionalized, it draws heavily from the experiences and challenges I have witnessed and lived through, making it a reflection of the struggles that many of us face in different forms. My hope is that by sharing this story, I can offer a beacon of hope and a source of strength to those who are navigating their own difficult paths.
Life’s journey is filled with ups and downs, moments of darkness, and glimpses of light. It’s in these moments of struggle that we discover our true resilience and determination, qualities that ultimately define who we are and who we become. Through this novel, I aim to highlight the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity, and the importance of hope, even in the most challenging of times.
I am deeply grateful for your support, and it is my sincere hope that this story resonates with you on a personal level. Whether you find comfort, inspiration, or simply a connection to a shared human experience, my wish is that this novel serves as a reminder that none of us are ever truly alone in our struggles. We all have the strength within us to rise above our circumstances and find our own path to healing and happiness.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Your readership means the world to me, and I am honored to share this story with you.
With love and gratitude,
McPatti Langston
